Rabbi Michael Solomon Boekstal was born and raised in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, where he studied graphic design and for a while had his mind set on becoming a stage director. The unlikely result of that combination: A 20 year award winning career in advertising as a copywriter and creative director.
Since The Netherlands has a population of over 16 million people, while it is only half the size of Rhode Island and has 215 rainy days a year, the need for space and the smell of wet raincoats drove him to the United States.
Here in America, Michael was able to pursue a life long dream. While he worked as an educational and program director for a synagogue in Kansas City, he studied to become a rabbi. He currently resides in Lincoln, Nebraska, with plenty of sun and real seasons, with his amazing wife, altogether three pretty decent children, two dogs and four cats.
He volunteers at a free health clinic, serves on the board of his synagogue and is the president of the local Jewish Federation. When he isn’t spending time with his family, working or writing, he runs, works out and tries to master yoga.
